SteelCase
I bought a Lucy chair in 2002 and it broke down after years of use. I contacted SteelCase about my 10 year warranty. After 10 days I got a replacement chair from them.
Congratulations to SteelCase for excellent customer service.
In the STATE OF FEAR – Fear is good
The reason that I was told is that everyone is concerned that the new democratic administration “Obama” is going to impose a ban on certain types of guns. They also said that everyone was preparing for the big gun show just a few days before the presidential inauguration; and that they expected to run out of guns during that show as well.
So how could the ecommerce industry benefit from such an uninformed, uneducated response to bad information?
– because any gun control bill needs to be approved by the house and senate first and that certainly will not happen the very first day Obama takes office. Second, Obama supports local gun ban legislation, in other words local authorities would pass laws that would be covered by county or even at the state level. That certainly will take even longer to pass, and the ban covers mostly dealers and not buyers. Buyers still have the option to buy from other counties and reciprocal states.
– because most gun owners should know by now that there is never a shortage of guns. Just after a few Google searches I was able to find out simple statistics from the National Shooting Sports Foundation. For example just “USA” manufacturers make an average of one Million hand guns a year. That does not include international manufacturers like Italians, Chinese, British, etc. For example in 1996 the US alone had 223 million guns. It would be expected that this information should be widely known by now; or is it?
– The reality is that everybody was singing the same song; not only the local dealer but also their advertising. Just 2 weeks later I heard a radio spot saying that the ban is coming and that they sold a lot of guns in one day.
It was clear to me that these people were using fear to increase sales during holiday 2008 and hopefully the first quarter for 2009. I am also sure that the gun industry could teach us many marketing lessons based on fear as well. But the bottom line is how we could use this model to increase sales during tough economic times in other industries.
– Using fear in order to reactivate the economy is not a bad thing. Everyone one knows that this is the best time to buy if you have cash. Homes, cars, luxury items, vacation packages, clothes have not been this cheap in years, maybe even a decade in some instances. So what is stopping people from purchasing? Fear! Fear of running out of available cash. Fear of losing their jobs. Fear in not knowing what will happen. Fear is contagious.
The available inventories that are currently highly discounted will not last forever. So the fear to lose the opportunity is certainly the best marketing tool available. The fear of not getting what you always wanted and could never afford is also a good variance for luxury items. In housing for example the fear to lock your loan with the lowest interest rates in decades is also a great incentive.
We could learn a lot from the gun industry. The ability to act as a group and push the same agenda to consumers is certainly one of them. If the ecommerce industries act together we could see higher results than expected.
The State of eCommerce for 2008/2009
How will established online retailers be able to compete against other retailers on their way out?
One viable solution is to match and mask discount % on equal basis. This approach will not work with educated online consumers but should provide a cushion to attract the periphery.
Another approach that more desperate retailers will try is to match pound per pound cutting severely on margins to keep up. This could be particularly true for multi channel retailers whose inventories are guaranteed.
Without doubt the most affected group will be the middle tier online retailers who don’t enjoy mass quantity, production and pricing.
In my opinion this recession will create shift in retail history as from this point on; online retail will no longer take a secondary strategic backseat to brick and mortar operations. Furthermore, if this recession becomes a depression we could see many retailers shifting to online operations only in order to cut head count, inventory, and retail space cost.
We could also see a shift in manufacturing and logistics as many retailers could push wholesalers into a drop ship model and manufacturing on demand.
One thing is certain. No recessions or depression leaves without a mark.
